Cuban culture has a way of opening the hearts of visitors, especially when it is seen through the eyes of people who truly love the culture of the island.

This week, I had a moment of stress and longing for Cuba. I was longing for the complete presence that I experience immersed in the hot, humid air, music and sounds on the streets, and the complete connection that I feel to others even just walking down the streets.

I asked my dear friend, who was born in Havana and has lived in California for 14 years, “What do you miss most about Cuba?”

He got very quiet and said, “There is too much.”

Cuban culture has special quality that makes it hard to put into words the longing, when it has been too long.
